Leadership Opportunities

Student Services will work with students to identify leadership opportunities within the School and our larger CUNY community.

Malave Leadership Academy

CUNY’s Malave Leadership Academy (MLA) develops leadership values and skills through experiential civic engagement, advocacy activities, and leadership competency training. MLA students learn how to be effective leaders both within CUNY and their own communities.

CUNY SPS students are invited to apply for the MLA at the start of the fall semester each year. Selected students participate in educational workshops and conferences based on three leadership models: Social Change Model, Student Leadership Challenge, and Servant Leadership.

Recent activities included participation in the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus; SOMOS El Futuro Conference; New York state legislative hearings; and legislative advocacy trips to Albany.

Women’s Leadership Conference

Each fall semester, CUNY SPS students are invited to participate in the CUNY Women’s Leadership Conference. The goal of this invitation-only, one-day conference is to inspire women students with demonstrated leadership qualities to further develop their skills and realize their potential as leaders. In the past, keynote speakers have included Rosanna Rosado, publisher and CEO of El Diario/La Prensa; New York City First Lady Chirlane McCray; and Donna E. Shalala, President, Clinton Foundation.

Students interested in attending the Women’s Leadership Conference must be in good academic standing, and nominated by the Office of Student Services. If you would like more information contact studentservices@sps.cuny.edu.
